Exploring the whale shark genome

A project to sequence the whale shark genome is a collaboration between Tim Read, a professor of infectious diseases at Emory University School of Medicine, and Alistair Dove, director of research and conservation at the Georgia Aquarium. The researchers are particularly interested in exploring the immune system of the ancient creature. Emory undergraduate students of biology are the first to take a crack at studying the raw data. As part of an introductory biology lab course the students are studying individual proteins and genes and creating Wiki pages of their discoveries, to make new knowledge about the whale shark publicly available for others to investigate.
