Create a woodcut print at Carlos museum workshop

A workshop at the Michael C. Carlos Museum will let participants create their own works of art in the form of a print from a woodcut.

"Concept & Creation: Printmaking Workshop for Adults" will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Tate Room, which is on the plaza level of the museum.

Atlanta printmaker Deborah Sosower will first explore a variety of printmaking techniques featured in the Carlos exhibition "God Spoke the Earth: Stories of Genesis in Prints and Drawings." She will then work with participants to design, carve and print from a woodcut.

Sosower says that as a medium with several distinct processes, printmaking provides the means to articulate oneself visually in a vast variety of ways.

"The very nature of printmaking engages your mind and makes you a better critical thinker," she says. "I believe that participants will enjoy learning the oldest printmaking process and come away with an enriched appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship of fine prints, particularly the gorgeous works currently on display at the Carlos Museum."

The exhibition on which the printmaking workshop is based is from the Carlos' collection of prints and is part of the yearlong Creation Stories project at Emory. The title of the exhibition derives from the creation story recounted in the second chapter of Genesis, in which God speaks the creation of Earth and all living things.

Fees are $60 for Young Associates of the museum; $75 for museum members and $100 for non-members. Registration is required by calling 404-727-0519.
