Panel to discuss mentorship for faculty and students

Mentorship of faculty and students across the units of the University is the topic of a panel dialogue on Thursday, Feb. 27.

"Emory Engaged: Mentoring Matters" will begin at 5 p.m. in the Winship Cancer Institute Auditorium C5012. The event is open to the public. A reception will follow.

Several ongoing initiatives within Emory's professional schools, the health sciences, and Emory College of Arts and Sciences that focus on student and faculty mentorship will be discussed. Other topics include integrating and enhancing fundamental liberal arts values such as critical thinking; civic, community, global engagement; innovation into mentorship; and sharing best practices across the units of the University.

The goal of the mentoring initiatives is to build capacity so all students and faculty have an opportunity to be both mentee and mentor and to support others in their professional endeavors.

The panel moderator is Pamela Scully, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and African Studies; Director of the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence.

Panelists are:

  • Debra Houry, Vice Chair for Research and associate professor in Emergency Medicine and Environmental Health
  • Deborah Bruner, Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Nursing and vice chair of the Commission on the Liberal Arts
  • Patricia Marsteller, Professor of Practice, Department of Biology and director of the Center for Science Education
  • Deema Elchoufi, 2013 Global Health Institute Field Scholar

The event is co-sponsored by the Commission on the Liberal Arts and the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence.
