The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) will induct Emory University nurse educator Tami Thomas, PhD, RN, into its 2013 Fellowship class at the organization's 28th Annual Conference in Las Vegas in June.
Induction into the AANP Fellowship is considered one of the highest honors for nurse practitioners. Fellows are elected through a highly selective process that recognizes nurse practitioner leaders who have made outstanding contributions to health care through clinical practice, research, education and policy.
"The AANP has set the standard for action to improve access to care in response to the Institute of Medicine/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recommendations on the Future of Nursing,” said Thomas. “It is an honor and a privilege to be a Fellow. I look forward to working with other AANP fellows to improve health care and health care access for all Americans, especially children and adolescents."
Thomas is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner who joined Emory’s School of Nursing as an Assistant Professor in 2010. She has been a lifelong advocate for underserved children and their families. Her research focuses on developing interventions for adolescent and pediatric populations experiencing health disparities in rural areas. Thomas is known nationally for her research in population specific risk factors of infectious disease, cancer prevention and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. She is an alumna of the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar program.
Thomas earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, all in nursing, from the University of Florida.
