Longtime gynecologist and obstetrician Joseph Tate, MD, known for his expertise in VBACs (vaginal births after Cesarean-sections), has been awarded the inaugural REAL Award for Newborn and Mother Care. The REAL Awards, created by Save the Children and in partnership with the Frontline Health Workers Coalition, are a first-of-a-kind global awards program designed to develop greater respect and appreciation for health workers and the lifesaving care they provide globally, as well as in the United States.
Tate is a clinical assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine, where he completed his residency training. He is a solo practitioner who runs his own clinic called DeKalb/Gwinnett OB/GYN, with the help of some family members and other staff. Tate is seen walking the halls almost daily at Emory University Hospital Midtown, where he delivers all of his patients’ babies.
During his career, which spans over 28 years, he has delivered more than 6,000 babies.
“I am very honored to have received this prestigious award,” says Tate, who was nominated by one of his patients. “My patients know that I believe in a woman’s ability to birth. Sometimes intervention is needed in the birthing process, and other times, waiting on Mother Nature may be the best course.”
Tate was selected as the inaugural honoree in the REAL Awards Newborn and Mother Care category out of a pool of 47 nominees.
“Dr. Tate is an excellent practitioner who is well-known and well-liked in metro-Atlanta and across the region,” says Ira Horowitz, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory. “His expertise in the field of OB/GYN is commendable and we are delighted he has earned this award.”
The REAL Awards are made possible by the support of presenting sponsors Medtronic Foundation, The Merck Company Foundation, and Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation and Competition in Healthcare, and supporting partners GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and Time Inc.
