Cooler buildings help Emory save energy over the holidays

Emory will turn down the temperature in several campus buildings this holiday season as part of the University-wide effort to reduce energy use by 25 percent per square foot by 2015.

From Dec. 22-25 and Dec. 29-Jan 1, the temperature in many campus buildings will be programmed and maintained at 50 degrees Fahrenheit, which will reduce energy costs while still protecting building contents. The heat will be turned back up early enough on the day before the workdays of Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 to ensure a comfortable work environment for all building occupants.

Last year, approximately $41,000 was saved during the annual holiday building turndown, according to Emory's Office of Sustainability Initiatives. Additionally, emissions of 375 tons of carbon dioxide were prevented, which is roughly equivalent to removing the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 71 cars.

Before leaving for the holidays, all building occupants are encouraged to turn off interior lights, and unplug computers and other office equipment.
