Ajay Nair, senior vice president and dean of Campus Life, has issued a statement in response to the opposition expressed by community members and groups regarding the presence of a Chick-fil-A franchise on campus in light of the company's charitable donations and statements by its president in opposition to same-sex marriage.
"The issues that have been identified with regard to Chick-fil-A have engaged the most serious ethical thinking at all levels of the university; those of open expression, protection against discrimination and hatred, respect for diversity of viewpoints, and commitment to reasoned dialogue and debate, even when these become difficult," wrote Nair. "Many of the questions raised go to the very heart of our institutional commitments."
Campus discussions regarding these issues have resulted in a set of principles related to the presence of Chick-fil-A at Emory. The statement also includes information on how Campus Life and Emory's food service provider, Sodexo, will work collaboratively with stakeholders this spring to identify retail dining brands that fulfill customer preferences.
