Update: Holiday gift and giving opportunities at Emory

Emory Healthcare kicked off the holiday season with Night of Lights celebrations, including this one at Wesley Woods. Emory Photo/Video.

Giving opportunities and seasonal and special events are going on around campus as the semester ends and the holiday time begins. Here are a few taking place now:

Emory University Bookstore is conducting a book drive for the library at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Egleston. The bookstore has a bin on the first floor to collect donations.  "The hospital is only able to use new children's books so we offer a discount for children's books so they can go immediately into the bin," according to Lang Thompson, text and trade manager. "There are several displays of inexpensive children's books for selection."  He notes the hospital can also take used adult general reading books since there are many parents and other family members who use the library.  The bookstore currently takes costumes like Curious George and Clifford the Big Red Dog to the hospital about every six weeks.

New, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots are being collected from now through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Drop them off in the box at the Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute area of suites on the first floor of Woodruff Health Sciences Administration Building at 1440 Clifton Road, according to Andrew West, senior center administrator of ACTSI.

A Holiday Clothing Drive for Grady Memorial Hospital has been extended to Monday, Dec. 17.  Items are being collected at 1762 Clifton, Plaza 1000.

The Michael C. Carlos Museum's holiday book and gift sale concludes Saturday, Dec. 8. Every item in the store is discounted 20 percent for these two days only, including the selection of already-reduced sale books in front of the shop. Books, jewelry, statuary, cards, world music, DVDs and more are available. Also, give a family member or friend the gift of a membership to the museum.

On Sunday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., the Bobby Jones Scholars, Volunteer Emory and the Dobbs University Center will host a charity screening of the film "Love Actually" in the Harland Cinema. A $5 suggested donation is asked, with all funds raised to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Michael Koudounas, student coordinator of the event, says, "It's the ultimate feel-good comedy and that's guaranteed to get everyone into the holiday spirit."

The Emory community is invited to a festive holiday drop-in at the Great Hearth Room of the Emory Conference Center Hotel on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 1p.m. – 3 p.m.  The invitation is issued by the Dean of the Chapel and Religious Life Susan Henry-Crowe. RSVP to Bonnie Powell.

The Multicultural Holiday Party is Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 4:30 p.m. in the Winship Ballroom of the Dobbs University Center. It is sponsored by African American Studies, Black Student Alliance and Office of Multicultural Programs & Services. There will be featured performances by VOIS, AHANA A Capella and other student cultural groups. "Dr. Nagueyalti Warren's class annually performs a Kwanzaa ceremony during the holiday party and student groups discuss their various cultural observances.  It is attended by students, staff, faculty and administrators annually," says Patricia Taylor of the Office of Multicultural Programs & Services.
