It pays to participate in Emory's new health screenings

Beginning in January, employees and retirees of Emory University and Emory Healthcare will have the opportunity to earn an incentive on their medical plan by taking part in a health screening and an online health assessment.

"Emory is offering the incentive as part of our 2013 benefits package to encourage our faculty and staff to get key information about their health," says Theresa Milazzo, associate vice president of human resources. "Often, our busy lives and multiple priorities make it hard to take the time to care for our own health. The health screening and online health assessment are easy ways to get a better understanding of our overall health. Many of us are already on the right track to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and some of us may discover there are things we can do to be healthier."

By participating in both activities, employees can earn either a $100 credit against their deductible/co‐insurance (POS Plan members) or a $200 contribution to their health savings account (HSA Plan members).

Free screenings promote better health

To encourage high participation, Emory is bringing free health screenings to over 50 locations around Emory University and Emory Healthcare campuses in January and February. The onsite screening will measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and height/weight through a finger stick blood draw; fasting is not required. Participants will meet one-on-one with a health professional to discuss their screening results and will receive information about healthy living.

Employees can complete the online health assessment, a brief questionnaire, sometime after Jan. 1, 2013 at www.aetna.com. By answering a series of health‐related questions, participants will receive immediate feedback on their health habits and risks, including a health score.

Individual results from both the screening and health assessment are confidential and will not be shared with Emory. Aggregate, or group level, data will be provided to Emory to identify and address the health needs of the employee population as a whole, which will help steer future preventive care programs.

Register now for 2013 appointments

Free onsite screenings begin on Jan. 15, 2013. Employees can register for their free screening appointment now, either online or by calling 1-877-686-6636 (press 6). An employee ID is needed to register. Those unable to attend the onsite screenings or who prefer to use their physician for a screening can also receive the incentive.

"This is a new initiative for Emory and we are very excited to offer our employees the opportunity to better understand their health and provide tools for maintaining or improving it," adds Milazzo. "Promoting better health helps all of us."
