Classroom on the Green looks at education reform
Classroom on the Green, an outdoors themed session on a topic of universal interest, will be Tuesday, April 17 at 4 p.m. at Asbury Circle.

This year's topic is education reform. The featured speaker is Ron Clark, winner of Disney Teacher of the Year Award and author of the New York Times bestseller "The Essential 55."

Clark's latest project is the Ron Clark Academy, a private nonprofit school in Atlanta, noted for its unique curriculum. The school also gives students opportunities for international travel and offers training workshops for teachers to learn more about Clark's teaching methods.

A related film screening on Tuesday, April 10 at 8 p.m. in Harland Cinema will show "The Ron Clark Story," a 2006 television film in which Matthew Perry portrayed Clark.

An education panel is also planned. Student Brian Fuller says Emory senior Stephanie Spangler will moderate the panel. Joining Clark on the panel will be Italian studies professor Christine Ristaino, education studies professor Aiden Downey and Emory alumnus Michael Turgeon who is with Teach for America.  Fuller is vice president of the Student Government Association, which sponsors Classroom on the Green with the College Council.

All events are free and open to all.

Past topics for Classroom on the Green have included health care reform, immigration and the military.
