The Winship Win the Fight 5K Walk/Run, an event hosted on the Emory University campus for the last nine years, will be held virtually this year with a week-long series of events beginning on Sept. 26 and culminating with a celebratory program on Oct. 3.
Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University launched the Winship 5K in 2011, with the dual goals of celebrating the real progress already achieved against cancer and of raising funds to support Winship’s research programs. Thousands of cancer survivors, caregivers, researchers and community members have participated in the event since that time and have raised over $5.7 million in support of Winship’s research.
“The Winship 5K unifies many people around our mission of lessening the burden of cancer by aligning our cancer research with our cancer care and prevention efforts. The incredible team spirit that is the hallmark of the Winship 5K has been heightened by our collective journey through the global pandemic,” says Walter J. Curran Jr., MD, executive director of Winship. “As a virtual race this year, we look forward to our friends from far and wide participating and bringing their outstanding enthusiasm and creativity to this inspiring event!”
A virtual program will be held Oct. 3, featuring messages from Emory President Gregory L. Fenves, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, cancer survivors and others. The Winship Win the Fight 5K website is now open for registration; you can start a team, join a team, watch inspiring videos of past participants, download printable race bibs, social media banners, and virtual backgrounds.
