In an effort to the keep the flu (in addition to COVID-19) off campus, so students can remain on campus, Emory today rolled out a flu shot landing page and organized three flu shot locations to encourage students to get vaccinated. Flu vaccines are free for all Emory students and will remain so until supplies run out.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu shots for all persons over 6 months of age. While it’s good practice that Emory students, faculty and staff receive flu shots annually, experts say that getting a flu shot in 2020 is more important now than ever.
“Flu symptoms are very similar to COVID-19 symptoms, so it’s imperative that we control the flu as best we can to prevent unnecessary challenges to the health care system,” says Dr. Sharon Rabinovitz, executive director of Student Health Services. “By taking charge of your health and getting your flu shot, you are protecting yourself and others.”
Flu vaccines will be available and offered to Emory students at the following Atlanta-campus locations:
- Wednesday, Sept. 23 – Tuesday, Oct. 6: Woodruff P.E. Center
- Thursday, Oct. 8 – Wednesday, Oct. 21: Emory Conference Center
- Monday, Oct. 12 – Friday, Nov. 20: Student Health Services 1st floor Atrium (1525 Clifton Road)
Students are encouraged to visit Emory’s flu website regularly as additional dates, locations and times will be added as they are confirmed.
Students who go to the Woodruff P.E. Center or the Emory Conference Center for flu shots do not need to make appointments and can receive the vaccination while being tested for COVID-19. Students who plan to receive a Flu shot at Student Health Services must first schedule an appointment through the student health portal, where students can also find more information about flu shot location hours.
Free flu shots have been available to students on the Oxford campus since early September. Oxford students can receive their free flu shots in the Murdy Seminar Room after testing negative for COVID-19 in the Murdy Breezeway. Oxford students can also schedule a flu shot appointment through Oxford Student Health by calling 770-784-8376.
If you become sick with flu-like symptoms, seek medical evaluation early to determine whether the symptoms are from flu or COVID-19. Students who experience flu or COVID-19 symptoms should reach out to Student Health Services through the patient portal and send a message to the COVID-19 assessment provider. A provider will call you and conduct a phone evaluation and schedule a visit as appropriate.
