It will be easy to get into the Halloween spirit during the next week as groups on campus and in the Emory community host spooky and not-so-spooky activities. Here are some of the happenings from now through Halloween night:
Through Sunday, Nov. 3
The Woodruff PE Center’s Halloween Hustle Challenge runs until Sunday, Nov. 3. Sign up to track your steps during cardiovascular activities such as walking, running or jogging. The two-week challenge is in honor of Respiratory Care Week, and meeting certain step goals can qualify you for prizes. It’s free to participate.
Friday, Oct. 25
Puppy Petting Boo, sponsored by Pawsitive Outreach, is your chance to hang out and play with puppies from PAWS Atlanta in their Halloween garb. The event will be Friday from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m on the Alabama Hall lawn. A $2 donation is suggested to participate; items for PAWS Atlanta (blankets, newspapers, paper towels, tennis balls and cat toys) also will be accepted for donation.
Saturday, Oct. 26
Haunted Harris, the annual haunted house at Harris Hall, will be Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. (the last tour group will walk through at 9:20 p.m.). The entrance fee is a donation of any amount, with proceeds going directly to UNICEF. Some parts of the attraction might not be suitable for children under age 12 or for anyone with certain health conditions (such as pregnancy, high blood pressure, seizures or claustrophobia). Anyone who survives the scariness will be treated to a spooky dessert
Also on Saturday, the Michael C. Carlos Museum will host Coco on the Quad, a family-friendly event featuring the Disney Pixar animated movie “Coco.” Visit the Art of the Americas galleries beginning at 6 p.m. to see ancient West Mexican ceramic versions of the dog featured in “Coco” (a type of Mexican hairless dog known as a Xoloitzcuintle), then meet Xolos that are visiting with a local breeder. Purchase fresh handmade empanadas, cold Jarrito drinks and Mexican hot chocolate from Mami’s Empanadas before enjoying the movie at 8 p.m. The evening is free to Carlos Museum members and children ages 5 and under; $5 for nonmembers (empanadas and drinks sold separately). Museum admission is free for Emory University faculty, staff, students, alumni and families of students during Homecoming Weekend 2019 (Thursday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Oct. 27). Space for Coco on the Quad is limited, so online registration is required.
Sunday, Oct. 27
Gather a crowd to join Halloween festivities with Open Streets Emory Village from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. The fun kicks off with a parade at 2 p.m. (dress up to participate), followed by an afternoon that includes Glenn Trunk or Treat, the ever-popular Dog Costume Contests (Best Costume and Best in Show) and the rubber duckie race at 5 p.m. Music, dance demonstrations, rock wall climbing, face painting, food and more will round out the day. There is no charge for admission, but you’ll need to pay for food and some activities.
Wednesday, Oct. 30
If movies are your thing, the Center for Women will host a “Twitches” watch party on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The free event will be in AMUC Suite 105, with dinner and Halloween candy for attendees.
Thursday, Oct. 31
The Center for Women also will host The Witching Hour on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in AMUC Suite 105. Stop by to catch a screening of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” create your own wicked witch potion and indulge in some spooky snacks. Admission is free.
