An enthusiastic crowd filled the Carlos Museum Reception Hall on June 13 for “Here Still / Still Here,” a celebration of the 150th birthday of Irish poet W.B. Yeats featuring readings, music and more.
The celebration featured a display of Yeats materials from Emory’s Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library and a preview of "'The Waters and the Wild’: Alen MacWeeney Photographs of Ireland," opening at the Carlos Museum in the fall.
Presenters included Paul Gleeson, Consul General of Ireland, and Emory’s Natasha Trethewey, Jim Flannery, Geraldine Higgins and Ron Schuchard.
Yeatsian masks were on display for a staged reading of "The Cat and the Moon" by members of the Arís Theatre Company.
Musicians Kathy Cowan, Joseph Sobol and Lauren Lebois performed excerpts from the musical "In the Deep Heart's Core."
Consul General of Ireland Paul Gleeson read Yeats’ "September, 1913.”
Emory professor emeritus James Flannery, founder of the W.B. Yeats Foundation, recited “The Song of Wandering Aengus.”
Geraldine Higgins, associate professor of English and director of the Irish Studies Program, discussed the great love and muse of Yeats' life, Maud Gonne, and read "The Cloths of Heaven" and "Broken Dreams."
Natasha Trethewey, former U.S. poet laureate and Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing, read Yeats' poem "Easter, 1916."
Ron Schuchard, professor emeritus of English, read Yeats' "The Second Coming" and "The Stare’s Nest By My Window" and discussed the composition and historical context of both poems.
