Emory University kicks off the school year Saturday, Aug. 23, with move-in day for residence halls and the start of freshman orientation. Classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 27, for all students.

Freshman class profile: The Emory College of Arts and Sciences, the university's primary undergraduate division, welcomes about 1,375 first-year students and their families to campus this weekend. Opening weekend activities

Highlights of Emory's opening weekend activities on Saturday, Aug. 23, include:

  • Residence Hall Check-In, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. First-year students will move in to their residence halls Saturday. Raoul Hall (2 Eagle Row), Emory's newest dorm, opens this weekend. President James Wagner and Senior VP and Dean of Campus Life Ajay Nair and other university leadership will be on hand to welcome and help students move in to Dobbs Hall (586 Asbury Circle). Few & Evans Hall (4 Eagle Row), Hamilton Holmes Hall (623 Pierce Promenade) and Longstreet-Means Hall (646 Means Drive) are some of Emory's newest dorms and are accessible on campus via Clifton Road and Eagle Row.
  • Emory Class of 2018 photo, 6:30 p.m. The entire Class of 2018 will gather for the annual class photo. Emory Quadrangle. (Here's a time-lapse video of last year's photo.)
  • Popular "How to Parent a College Student" speeches, various times: For more than 30 years, Emory psychology professor Marshall Duke has given an annual speech to auditoriums full of nervous parents preparing to leave their child at the university. He'll deliver the talks for the final time this weekend. Covering everything from resisting daily communication to letting students solve their own problems, Duke's entertaining and frank speeches provide practical advice about what parents can expect during a student's first year of classes and how to adjust to the changes in their lives and their child's.

Sunday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m. in the Math and Science Center, room 208 (400 Dowman Drive)
