Concert traditions, alumni performances wrap up year

The month of May features Emory's musical alumni in concert, an organ recital celebrating Commencement, and the final concerts of the season for the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta.

Emerson Chamber Music Society of Atlanta Emerson Series presents the Vega String Quartet on Saturday, May 5 at 8 p.m. Emory's quartet-in-residence will be performing notable string quartet repertoire by Beethoven, Ravel and Mendelssohn. Tickets: $20; discount category members $15; Emory faculty, staff, Friends of Music and all students free.

The Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra performs Wednesday, May 9 at 8 p.m. This concert will feature the winner of the EYSO Concerto Competition, and a performance of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony.

Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta Noontime Series presents Ransom Notes on Friday, May 11 at noon in Michael C. Carlos Museum. Emory's Director of Piano Studies and ECMSA Artistic Director William Ransom performs duets with his sister, violinist Kate Ransom.

Emory University Organist Timothy Albrecht will be giving a Commencement Organ Recital on May 13.

The Annual Cherry Emerson Memorial Alumni Concert will take place on Sunday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Miller-Ward Alumni House. This concert features Emory's outstanding musical alumni in a performance to celebrate graduation. Alumni include Daniel Cole '93C, bass; Anna Kang '12C, violin; and Leo Saguiguit '87C, saxophone.

Also on Sunday, May 13 at 4 p.m., Emory University Organist Timothy Albrecht will be giving a Commencement Organ Recital featuring a selection of light classics to celebrate Emory Commencement Weekend. The program includes many favorites among organ repertoire, including Widor's "Toccata from Symphony V," Mozart's "Organ Sonata in C Major," Chapman's "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella" and even an original composition.

The Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony will be performing on Monday, May 21 at 8 p.m. This final concert of the AYWS season will also feature the Atlanta Percussion Group and pianist Luka Marinkovic.
