COMMENCEMENT NEWS   CEREMONY Celebrating the Class of 2021 Learn about this year's Commencement ceremonies, set for May 14-16 at the Georgia World Congress Center, including how to watch Dr. Anthony Fauci’s address to Emory College graduates on Sunday. CLASS OF 2021: EMORY COLLEGE Pairing relentless curiosity with an openness to opportunities Woodruff Scholar Karissa Kang winds up her Emory career with the same burst of energy and brilliance with which she started. Next stop: Yale Law School. CLASS OF 2021: OXFORD COLLEGE Leaving a legacy of leadership and service at Oxford Dylan Goldberg was the only student leader of a religious organization on the Oxford College campus last fall. He rose to the challenge, finding ways the Jewish Student Union could connect with everyone in the community. CLASS OF 2021: NURSING Using her own journey through challenges to benefit others Nursing student Mimi Yu recognizes the importance of focusing on both physical and mental health. Known as an encourager throughout her time on campus, she continues to share affirmations during her countdown to graduation. CLASS OF 2021: BUSINESS A powerful voice in challenging corporations to address justice A case note on racial inequalities in American history spurred Willie Sullivan’s desire for corporations to address large societal issues. The result was the inaugural John R. Lewis Racial Justice Case Competition. CLASS OF 2021: LANEY GRADUATE SCHOOL Personifying the importance of mentorship in graduate school PhD student Alisina Bazrafshan’s mentoring days began during college in Tehran. He continued that work while studying at Laney Graduate School, promoting the significance of higher education to underserved youth from refugee families in Atlanta. CLASS OF 2021: PUBLIC HEALTH A ‘heart’ for health, justice and helping others Honored with a “Heart of Emory” award, MPH student and future HIV epidemiologist Nellie Garlow has dedicated her time to the COVID-19 Outbreak and Response Team, the Rollins Election Day Initiative, and more. CLASS OF 2021: THEOLOGY Connecting Candler and community during COVID-19 As a child, Alex Revelle recorded church services for members who couldn’t leave their homes. Decades later, that knowledge proved invaluable during the pandemic and will continue to build connections wherever he serves. CLASS OF 2021: MEDICINE Grateful for the ‘direct medical impact’ of earning her MD Kristin Limpose reflects on being a doctor with a disability, the importance of listening to patients and what it has been like to complete medical school during a pandemic. CLASS OF 2021: LAW A career of service, from doctor to social justice lawyer Suman Malempati left his career as a pediatric oncologist, researcher and associate professor of pediatrics to train as a social justice lawyer because he could “no longer be an observer.” CLASS OF 2021: HONORS Biana to spotlight rethinking resilience as Emory College class orator Mikko Biana began working as a steward for community shortly after arriving at Emory. His address as class orator will reinforce that concept, while also reminding graduates they have the power to change narratives.

OTHER NEWS   SPORTS Emory welcomes return to University Athletic Association conference competition The University Athletic Association has announced its decision to return to a full schedule of conference competition this fall, ending a pandemic-related hiatus. Emory’s 19 varsity sports teams are part of the UAA, which competes in the NCAA’s Division III. LEADERSHIP Gelaye promoted to senior vice president and dean of Campus Life Enku Gelaye is being promoted effective May 1 after serving as vice president and dean of Campus Life since August 2019. She is responsible for 15,000 students in areas such as undergraduate residential life, health and wellness, athletics and civic engagement. CONNECTIONS Police chief and student ambassador share highlights from their time at Emory Emory Police Chief Rus Drew and student ambassador Zion Kidd both came to Emory four years ago. Before Kidd graduates, they talked about social media, recent challenges and what brought them to the department. TEACHING History course uncovers ‘archival silences’ of enslaved people In the “Slavery and the Archive” class, students connected the threads from rare information sources in Emory’s library to build new stories and perspectives. RECOGNITION Theater and writing students receive Louis B. Sudler Prize in the Arts The Sudler Prize honors graduating seniors who have demonstrated exceptional promise in the performing or creative arts. Meet Ruth Puryear and Jack Stallins, Emory’s 2021 recipients. RESEARCH Emory, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta launch COVID-19 vaccine trial for young children Physicians from Emory and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are participating in a clinical trial testing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 6 months to less than 12 years. This is the same Moderna vaccine being distributed nationwide for adults.
