Suman Malempati left his career as a pediatric oncologist, researcher and associate professor of pediatrics to train as a social justice lawyer because he could “no longer be an observer.”

Mikko Biana began working as a steward for community shortly after arriving at Emory. His address as class orator will reinforce that concept, while also reminding graduates they have the power to change narratives.

Emory welcomes return to University Athletic Association conference competition
The University Athletic Association has announced its decision to return to a full schedule of conference competition this fall, ending a pandemic-related hiatus. Emory’s 19 varsity sports teams are part of the UAA, which competes in the NCAA’s Division III.

 

LEADERSHIP
Gelaye promoted to senior vice president and dean of Campus Life
Enku Gelaye is being promoted effective May 1 after serving as vice president and dean of Campus Life since August 2019. She is responsible for 15,000 students in areas such as undergraduate residential life, health and wellness, athletics and civic engagement.

 

CONNECTIONS
Police chief and student ambassador share highlights from their time at Emory
Emory Police Chief Rus Drew and student ambassador Zion Kidd both came to Emory four years ago. Before Kidd graduates, they talked about social media, recent challenges and what brought them to the department.

 

TEACHING
History course uncovers ‘archival silences’ of enslaved people
In the “Slavery and the Archive” class, students connected the threads from rare information sources in Emory’s library to build new stories and perspectives.

 

RECOGNITION
Theater and writing students receive Louis B. Sudler Prize in the Arts
The Sudler Prize honors graduating seniors who have demonstrated exceptional promise in the performing or creative arts. Meet Ruth Puryear and Jack Stallins, Emory’s 2021 recipients.

 

RESEARCH
Emory, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta launch COVID-19 vaccine trial for young children
Physicians from Emory and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are participating in a clinical trial testing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 6 months to less than 12 years. This is the same Moderna vaccine being distributed nationwide for adults.
