INSIGHT Stevenson speaks of justice, hope and reshaping national narratives During his keynote address, social justice advocate and human rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson urged graduates to “hold onto the power of hope” as they find ways to cross barriers and boundaries, increase their understanding of issues and fight injustice. HONORS Class Day moves online with speaker, senior awards and honors A Commencement tradition, Class Day 2020 featured a special message from Comedy Central comedian and actor Ronny Chieng and the presentation of multiple awards to undergraduate students. HONORS An advocate on campus and off, Long is graduate student Brittain Award recipient Seeing his sister, who has cerebral palsy, battle to receive a full education crystallized Cody Long’s desire to become a lawyer. As a student leader and advocate, he impacted Emory’s campus and the community. HONORS Meghjee garners undergraduate Brittain Award for service and artistic impact The undergraduate recipient of Emory’s highest student honor, filmmaker Samah Meghjee has been a creative, consistent voice for improving student mental health and supporting diverse communities. HONORS McMullan Award honors Thomas for leadership with compassion Adesola Thomas, an English and political science double major, distinguished herself by engaging as a scholar and leader at nearly every level on campus — and by carving out space for others to do so, too. HONORS From social justice to storytelling, class orator speaks out for others Emory College class orator Adama Kamara is a first generation American who has seen how facing fears can help build legacies — for herself and others. After graduation she will combine those lessons with storytelling traditions to speak on behalf of marginalized groups. FACULTY AWARDS   HONORS Jefferson Award honors Lisa Tedesco for visionary leadership Lisa Tedesco’s courageous leadership of Laney Graduate School has resulted in an extraordinary set of structural changes, innovative new programs and educational infrastructure, and crucial enhancements for graduate student education, support and professionalization. HONORS Lipstadt receives Exemplary Teacher Award for transformational teaching Widely known for her public scholarship in antisemitism and Holocaust studies, professor Deborah Lipstadt has a passion for shaping students’ lives by helping them connect history with modern-day experiences. HONORS Cuttino Award recognizes Flueckiger’s long legacy of mentorship Since arriving at Emory in 1992, religion professor Joyce Flueckiger has nurtured rigorous scholarship and mentorship in students, faculty and others. Her dedication was honored with the George P. Cuttino Award for Excellence in Mentoring. HONORS Emory Williams Awards recognize distinguished undergraduate teaching The Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award is presented annually to faculty members in each of the four undergraduate schools as part of Commencement celebrations. HONORS Distinguished Teaching Awards honor graduate, professional school faculty The Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence honors contributions of faculty across Emory’s seven graduate and professional schools. HONORS Faculty and staff noted for excellence in teaching, mentoring and more Faculty and staff were recognized with multiple awards in conjunction with the 2020 school ceremonies and the conclusion of the academic year. COVID-19 UPDATE   A glimmer of hope: Emory is the largest NIH site for the clinical trial of the antiviral drug Remdesivir as a potential treatment for COVID-19. Aneesh Mehta of the Emory Vaccine Center shared findings on this important study and discussed the next steps in analyzing this and other antiviral drugs used to treat patients. Watch the webinar.
