ACHIEVEMENT Emory student named Rhodes Scholar Chelsea Jackson, a political science and African American Studies double major, is Emory's 20th student to be selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, which provides for study at the University of Oxford in England. LEADERSHIP Emory community advocates for changes in proposed tax legislation Since House Republicans unveiled the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on Nov. 2, the Emory community has mobilized to advocate against provisions that would unduly impact Emory students, employees and patients. ADMISSIONS Emory to welcome displaced undergraduates from Puerto Rico In the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Emory is ready to welcome up to 32 undergraduate students displaced from their studies in Puerto Rico. IMPACT 'Essential' student support program receives Mellon Foundation funding Emory's Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, a program that expands access for underrepresented minorities to earn doctorates and faculty positions, has received renewed funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. INTERNATIONAL Photos showcase Emory students' fieldwork around the world Students in the Master's of Development Practice program perform months of fieldwork to gain insight on public health, economic development and human rights by living and working with varied populations. See the winners of this year's photo contest highlighting their efforts. LITERATURE Ellmann Lectures explore literary fathers and sons Acclaimed Irish author Colm Tóibín visited Emory to deliver the Richard Ellmann Lectures in Modern Literature, where he addressed the theme of "Writers and Their Fathers: Wilde, Yeats and Joyce." BUSINESS Goizueta's Grounds for Empowerment partners with Nicaragua's Vega Coffee Grounds for Empowerment -- a Social Enterprise @ Goizueta initiative -- is partnering with Nicaragua's Vega Coffee to provide even more economic opportunities for women who are specialty coffee farmers. IN MEMORIAM Frye, Emory's first provost, remembered for integrity, leadership Billy E. Frye, a respected scholar, educator and administrator who helped guide Emory during years of rapid campus and program development as the university's first provost, and later as interim president and then chancellor, died Nov. 14. EVENTS Celebrate the holidays with Emory campus traditions Emory's Atlanta and Oxford campuses welcome the return of several seasonal traditions, including A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2, in Glenn Memorial Auditorium.
