MILESTONE Emory receives record $628 million in external research funding for FY 2017 Emory researchers received $628 million from external funding agencies in fiscal year 2016-2017, the largest amount of research funding in the university's history. This marks the eighth consecutive year that research funding has exceeded $500 million. ENVIRONMENT Emory Sustainable Food Fair returns Friday A class of Emory College students invites the entire Emory community to come out Friday to learn about sustainable food practices and sample tasty treats at the 12th annual Sustainable Food Fair. IMPACT STEM Research and Career Symposium welcomes undergraduate, graduate scholars Convened by Emory's Laney Graduate School, the STEM Research and Career Symposium welcomes students from underrepresented groups to campus Oct. 2-3. The Emory community is invited to attend student research presentations and help showcase the university. TEACHING New science faculty bring diverse perspectives to the classroom A year-long initiative to recruit a cohort of faculty in the natural and social sciences has resulted in a cluster hire of five new faculty who are expected to have broad impact on the teaching and research missions of Emory College. ARTS Emory acquires letter to Jack Kerouac that inspired 'On the Road' A 60-year-old letter credited by American Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac as the inspiration for his novel "On the Road" has been acquired by Emory's Rose Library. The letter will be on display for the "The Dream Machine," a campus exhibit on the Beat Generation opening Thursday. COMMUNITY Emory emergency physicians join relief effort for Hurricane Maria victims Emergency medicine physicians from Emory University School of Medicine answered an urgent call last weekend from federal officials asking for assistance with a humanitarian relief effort for individuals in the Caribbean affected by Hurricane Maria. DISCOVERY Malawi yields oldest-known human DNA from Africa Emory anthropologist Jessica Thompson's work in Malawi is part of a major new paper in the journal Cell, filling in thousands of years of human prehistory of hunter-gatherers in Africa.
