ACHIEVEMENT Beinecke Scholarship will help Carnes study music across cultures The ear for music that made Emory College student Mallory Carnes an accomplished violist also gave her a gift for languages. As one of only 20 Beinecke Scholars selected from around the nation this year, she plans to pursue a PhD in ethnomusicology. HONORS Giddens, Ono garner Eleanor Main Awards for mentoring excellence PhD graduate Michelle Marie Giddens and mathematics professor Ken Ono are this year's winners of the Eleanor Main Graduate Mentor Awards, which recognize graduate students and faculty for outstanding mentoring. RESEARCH Climate change is in Atlanta's air For her undergraduate thesis, 2017 Emory College graduate Emily Li investigated how climate change is affecting air quality, pollution and health in Atlanta. Her findings are compiled on the website, Climate Change is in the Air, as a resource for local residents. ACCOMPLISHMENT Libraries honor students with undergraduate research awards Emory's Woodruff and Rose libraries recently honored 15 students with undergraduate research awards for their projects and papers that used primary sources they found in the libraries. COLLABORATION Conference to foster new partnerships, directions for computational neuroscience research Scientists and students from Atlanta's three major research universities will gather at Emory May 18-19 to discuss the latest in computational neuroscience, focusing on new directions in motor control. CAMPUS Summer brings robust schedule of events to Emory From bassoonists to athletes, high school debaters to future doctoral scholars, visitors will quicken the pace on campus this summer. Events kick into high gear this weekend, when Emory hosts Georgia's Special Olympics Summer Games. HEALTH CARE Winship awarded NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center status Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University has earned the prestigious comprehensive cancer center designation from the National Cancer Institute, placing it in the top one percent of all cancer centers in the United States. MILESTONE Emory's energy scorecard marks gains in savings, sustainability Emory's WaterHub reaches a milestone, reducing potable water use on campus by more than 100 million gallons during the past two years, as the university continues to make progress toward ambitious sustainability goals.
