Dear Colleagues:
I hope your winter break was marked by good health, happiness, and time spent with the people you love. As a recent resident of Atlanta, I used the time to begin acclimating to my new home city and learning more about its rich history and powerful cultural heritage. I’m particularly humbled to be part of the community that was once home to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—a man whose principles and legacy inspire the mission of Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center.
Dr. King once said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.” I’m truly honored to join a team of faculty, staff, students, and supporters who continuously work to ensure diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement for all people across the broad spectrum of health and healing. By addressing health disparities through our tripartite mission of education, research, and patient care, we are helping to rectify injustice in Atlanta and beyond and to build upon Dr. King’s vision and legacy.
The Emory community has planned a wide variety of thoughtful and informative events and activities in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and I encourage you to participate in those that are of interest to you.
As Dr. King once said, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” Thank you for perpetuating Dr. King’s ideals in your daily efforts on behalf of all the people we serve.
