Earlier this spring, Emory Global Engagement’s International Student and Scholar Services hosted Passport to Emory, an in-country pre-departure program for newly admitted students across all of Emory’s schools. This year’s program included stops in Hong Kong, New Delhi and Seoul.
The program fosters early connections with Emory, helping students build confidence and a sense of belonging as they prepare to begin their studies.
In-person sessions gave students and families the opportunity to build excitement about joining Emory. They received practical guidance on campus resources, immigration and visa processes, cross-cultural adjustment, and pre-departure preparation.
The goal is to use early engagement to lay a strong foundation for academic and personal success well before students arrive on campus.
“I initially felt a little nervous about joining Emory,” says Keying "Riley" Ren, an incoming Oxford College student who traveled from Wuxi, China, to attend Passport to Emory in Hong Kong. “But at Passport to Emory I met other incoming students and supportive staff, learned so much, and had many of my questions about the transition process answered. I had an amazing time, and the experience made me feel even more connected to the Emory community. I’m really looking forward to arriving on campus in August.”
For students still considering their enrollment options, the opportunity to engage directly with Emory representatives and alumni can play an important role in confirming their choice to attend.
“We are delighted to offer incoming students and their families an opportunity to learn more about Emory and to ask questions to alleviate any concerns or doubts about studying at Emory and in the United States,” says Shinn Ko, associate vice provost for international services and global engagement. “Passport to Emory has demonstrated strong strategic value as an initiative that enhances student and family engagement while strengthening Emory’s global visibility and institutional reputation.”
