Celebrating Emory School of Medicine’s Class of 2026

The air was fresh and crisp during the late morning of May 8, as the Doctor of Medicine Class of 2026 gathered outside the historic Glenn Memorial Auditorium. Inside, conversations overlapped into an affectionate hum until bagpipes began “The Emory and Old Saint Andrews March,” signaling that the 2026 procession was officially underway. Proud family and friends stood on tiptoes to capture videos and images of their loved ones.

Applause thundered as the medical faculty and the platform party assembled. Dean Sandra L. Wong beamed as she welcomed attendees to the ceremony, “At this time of year, we get to see our students become our colleagues in health care. You, our graduates, are the future of discovery, innovation and patient-centered care.”

She continued, “We are so lucky to be a part of the medical profession. We have the utterly humbling job of caring for others. Do your life's work with passion and pride. Bring your core values to work every day. And remember your purpose is often much bigger than yourself.”

The Dean reminded the graduating class, “You'll leave today's ceremony as new doctors. I know you'll make a difference in big ways and in small ways.”

Wong then introduced the ceremony speaker, John William Eley, “Dr. Eley has inspired generations of doctors to serve with courage, ingenuity and determination. Reminding all of us that the essence of medicine is caring for our communities,” said Wong.

The Dean noted that J. William Eley — who colleagues affectionately call “Bill” — set records as a member of the varsity swim team while earning his Emory undergraduate degree in chemistry. He also earned a medical degree and a Master of Public Health degree at Emory. Both his internal medicine and medical oncology residencies were at Emory. And in 1989, he joined the faculty, eventually rising to the rank of executive associate dean of medical education and student affairs. Ultimately, Eley is a venerable and beloved member of the School of Medicine.

“I would call Bill Eley a true Emory lifer,” she summarized with a knowing smile.

Eley paused to wipe away some tears before beginning his speech, which explored the literal and symbolic power of doors. “What we carry when we walk into a patient's room through their door, and what we're honored to take away when we leave those doors after having a doctor-patient interaction.”

He reminded the Class of 2026, “You have no idea what is going to be afforded to you when you enter a room. But there will be many, many gifts of walking into these rooms.”

“The work you have done — and the character and integrity that you have embraced — have led you to this sacred space and will carry you out the doors of this sacred space as a member of the profession of medicine.”

He closed, emphasizing, "We carry the souls of our patients with us the rest of our lives.”

The Class of 2026 joins an extensive network including more than 6,000 Emory medical alumni around the world.

Faculty awards were presented after Eley's address:

  • The Provost's Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education was presented to Mohammad Khan (radiation oncology) and Jessica Harding (surgery)
  • The Evangeline T. Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Award was presented to Clifford Gunthel (medicine)

The Emory School of Medicine Society of Corpus Cordis Aureum, or Golden Corps of the Heart, was recognized. Then, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and dual-degree students were hooded, followed by the MD class.

Class speaker Jessy Kline approached the lectern. “My name is Jessy Kline comma, MD,” she said with an emphatic laugh. “And it has been my utmost joy to represent my very, very impressive peers as class president during our time here.”

Kline noted this cohort has included engagements, weddings, group chats and new friends. She championed self-care as essential for providing quality care, “I think you're a happier doctor when you're happy and fulfilled. And you're happy and fulfilled when you help patients.”

Kline closed, “Thank you for being my classmates. I hope everyone finds a new medical community of peers and mentors to add on to the beautiful one we've grown together.”

“Thank you, Doctor Kline,” said Dean Wong before leading the ceremonial Oath of Hippocrates. She invited the physicians in the audience to stand with the graduating class and renew their oath. Following Eley's speech, the oath’s line “into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick,” rang through the auditorium with enhanced poignancy.

Then the colossal doors of Glenn Memorial Auditorium swung open, filling the room with warm light. Outside, the audience gathered to enjoy lunch and snap selfies with the School of Medicine’s newest graduating class, all while soaking up the bright sunlight enveloping the Emory Quad.
