Emory Nursing’s Moore named National Academies of Practice Distinguished Scholar Fellow

Shawana S. Moore, PhD, DNP, APRN, WHNP‑BC, FNAP, FAAN, FNPWH, a faculty member at the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, has been elected a Distinguished Scholar Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) Nursing Academy.
Moore was inducted into the NAP Class of 2026 on March 14 during the organization’s annual ceremony in Indianapolis, Ind.
Moore is an associate clinical professor and director of the school’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program. A nationally recognized, board‑certified women’s health nurse practitioner (NP), she works to improve access to women’s and gender-related health care.
Moore has spent over a decade caring for women and gender‑related populations in historically marginalized communities. She also founded the Girls Empowerment Program, a nurse‑led mentorship initiative. Moore serves nationally on boards and committees dedicated to women’s health care.
Moore’s research interests span women’s health, gender‑affirming care, adolescent empowerment, health equity, well‑woman care, pre‑pregnancy counseling, contraception, maternal obesity, gynecological conditions, telehealth, and environmental and climate influences on health. She has authored peer‑reviewed manuscripts and national position statements promoting equitable care.
The first Black president of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, Moore holds degrees from Wilberforce University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Duquesne University. She came to Emory from the Jefferson College of Nursing, where she led the women’s health gender-related NP program.
