There is still time to register for this year’s Winship Cancer Institute Win the Fight 5K, which steps off Saturday, Oct. 13, from the Emory University Quadrangle. Now in its eighth year, the event has raised more than $4.2 million to date in support of cancer research at Winship.

Registration for the Peachtree Road Race qualifier is open at winship5k.emory.edu. Anyone who is unable to attend in person has an option to join virtually, donate to the cause, and be recognized.

Online registration closes at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11. The online registration fee is $45 for Run Warriors, who will receive a timing chip, and $40 for Walk/Jog Warriors, who are not timed. There is no fee for children under 8 who aren’t timed or for Virtual Warriors who don’t attend the race but raise money for the Winship 5K.

Onsite registration is also available on Friday, Oct. 12, during early packet pickup from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Emory Quadrangle, and on Saturday morning from 7-8:25 a.m. before the race starts. Registration increases to $50 on race day and timing chips will not be available; only cash or checks will be accepted onsite.

For the second year in a row, nine-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee Dominique Wilkins will serve as the grand marshal of the event. Wilkins, who retired from professional basketball nearly 20 years ago, serves as the vice president of basketball operations and special advisor to the CEO for the Atlanta Hawks.

"It was a thrill to help more than 3,500 Winship 5K participants reach their $1 million fundraising goal last year and I'm ready to do it again," says Wilkins.

New this year: participants will be able to direct their tax-deductible donations to benefit the Winship 5K Professorship fund. Contributions can be made to 17 other Winship cancer research funds as well.

"The Winship 5K Professorship gives Winship 5K participants the opportunity to support an outstanding faculty member and his or her cancer research program," says Walter J. Curran Jr., MD, Winship's executive director. "Recognizing a Winship faculty member in this manner in their field of cancer research will impact Winship's cancer research work for years to come."
