Emory University’s Center for Humanitarian Emergencies (CHE) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) are launching their latest online course — Health in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies.

Beginning on Nov. 21, 2016, this course covers the technical and management principles that are the basis of planning, implementing and evaluating health programs for acutely displaced populations in developing countries. The emphasis is on refugees in camp situations, and the course includes modules on assessment, nutrition, epidemiology of major health problems, surveillance and program management in the context of an international relief operation.

The course is free and open to the public but participants may purchase a certificate for a nominal fee.

About the Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB)

The Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) applies public health and epidemiologic science to reduce the health impact of disasters and emergencies, including complex humanitarian events, on populations and to strengthen the recovery of health systems in these settings.  Working in partnership with other U.S. government agencies, United Nations (UN) agencies (UN High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR], UN Children’s Fund [UNICEF]), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), ERRB coordinates, supervises, and monitors CDC’s work in international emergency settings and in refugee or displaced populations. The branch also provides assistance during emergencies focusing on the following: Rapid assessments on health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and nutrition; Public health surveillance and epidemic investigations; Operational research in emergency and post-emergency settings; Program development and evaluation; Post-emergency health systems reconstruction; Partner capacity building. Their work with CHE is part of this commitment.

About The Center for Humanitarian Emergencies (CHE)

The Center for Humanitarian Emergencies is a joint effort between CDC's Emergency Response and Recovery Branch and Emory University that drives global collaboration, research and evidence based training to improve the lives and well-being of populations impacted by humanitarian emergencies. They provide training and experiential learning programs for MPH students, midcareer professionals and fellowship opportunities for internationally based emergency responders.
