If this edition of Emory Update has a theme, it has to be "groundbreaking." From groundbreaking faculty research to literally breaking ground to build two new health care facilities, Emory continues to strive to improve lives here in Atlanta and around the world.

I'm thrilled to introduce you to Max Cooper, an Emory professor whose discovery forever changed our understanding of the human immune system. I'm also excited to share Emory professor and President Jimmy Carter’s recent campus town hall, profiles of our "40 Under Forty" outstanding young alumni and highlights of innovative research on topics ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to political polarization.

How immunologist Max Cooper may have saved your life

A half-century ago, Emory immunologist Max Cooper made a discovery that forever changed our understanding of the human immune system. He recently received the Lasker Award, America's most prestigious biomedical honor, for his work that helped save countless lives.

RESEARCH

Emory to lead international drug discovery center for Alzheimer's

A team of researchers from around the world, led by Emory, will help accelerate the development of promising new therapies to treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease.

SOCIETY

Can 'intellectual humility' help temper political and religious polarization?

With support from a Templeton Foundation grant, Emory psychologist Scott O. Lilienfeld will study whether the ability to recognize that you might be wrong can be a buffer against extremism.

Bitter, salty, sour, sweet: After cancer, he can taste them all

Cancer threatened to rob chef Scott Adair of his sense of taste and his livelihood, but he's back in the kitchen after treatment through Emory's program for head and neck cancers.

COLLABORATION

Emory Healthcare and Atlanta Falcons break ground on new orthopaedics clinic

The Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center at Flowery Branch will provide a new location for patients, while also serving Falcons who may need diagnostic imaging or to be seen by a sports medicine expert.

COMMITMENT

Musculoskeletal Institute marks step forward for health innovation district

As the newest addition to Emory's Executive Park health innovation district, the Musculoskeletal Institute will be a patient and family-centered facility providing orthopaedics and spine care, physical therapy, imaging, ambulatory surgery and more.

Emory leads effort to honor M. Agnes Jones Elementary School namesake

Emory's Graduation Generation program led the creation of a mural and curriculum honoring Mary Agnes Boswell Jones, the first African American superintendent in the Atlanta Public School System, at the Atlanta elementary school bearing her name.

President Carter on peace, politics and peanut butter

At the 38th annual Carter Town Hall, President Jimmy Carter offered first-year students lessons in life and leadership gleaned from a lifetime of public service, plus answered questions ranging from his favorite books to his opinion of almond butter.

Emory hires three Latinx studies scholars to strengthen interdisciplinary scholarship

Emory has hired three eminent scholars in Latinx studies, highlighting the university's commitment to the study of race and ethnicity across the humanities and social sciences.

Emory ranks #1 in Teach For America recruits

Emory University has been ranked the top university of its size contributing the greatest number of graduating seniors to the 2019 Teach For America corps.
