Faculty Emory professor serves as Georgia House 'Chaplain of the Day'Emory professor Miriam Udel was honored Feb. 1 as Chaplain of the Day in the Georgia House of Representatives, offering an invocation at the start of the day's legislative session. Udel serves as Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies and as associate professor of Yiddish language, literature and culture. She spoke at the invitation of Rep. Esther Panitch. “This is a first for an Orthodox Jewish woman as they were only recently ordained into the rabbinate. Georgia has two such women; Miriam is one,” Panitch noted when introducing Udel. “And, after asking around, this appears to be the very first time a Jewish female rabbi of any denomination has led this House in prayer.” View her remarks. |
