CONNECTIONS What we can learn from America’s pandemic responses Emory professor Polly Price, author of “Plagues in the Nation: How Epidemics Shaped America,” sheds light on how the U.S. handled major outbreaks throughout history and how we can use these lessons to prepare for the next one. UNIVERSITY Deputy provost Christa Acampora to serve as dean at University of Virginia Christa Acampora, deputy provost for academic affairs at Emory, will serve as the next dean of the University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, effective Sept. 1. RESEARCH Novel drug shows promising efficacy for patients with multiple myeloma Results of an international clinical trial co-led by researchers at Winship Cancer Institute show potential for a novel drug to benefit patients with multiple myeloma whose disease either recurred or was resistant to three or more earlier lines of treatment. OPPORTUNITY Gateway program supports students traditionally underrepresented in the study of the ancient world Four Atlanta-area high school students spent two weeks on Emory’s campus this summer, learning about life in college and studying connections between the ancient Mediterranean world and our lives today.
