Juneteenth now recognized as official Emory University holiday
Emory University will recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday beginning this year. Juneteenth will be observed on Monday, June 20, 2022, for university staff, faculty and students.

 

RESEARCH
Emory celebrates its inventors
Faculty entrepreneurs and their discoveries were recognized at the Office of Technology Transfer’s 16th Annual Celebration of Technology and Innovation. Three new awards were added this year, for a total of seven categories.

Lobby renovation on tap for Woodruff Library
Renovation of the Woodruff Library’s lobby will take place this summer. Improvements will include making the entrance ADA compliant and remodeling the waiting areas.

Competition asks teams to predict how health care will look in 2040
The Healthcare Futuring Competition 2040, organized through Goizueta Business School, tasked student teams with developing scenarios of what the U.S. health care system might look like in 2040.

IMPACT
Giving a kidney started with giving knowledge
Two Emory School of Nursing faculty members, who have worked collaboratively in research surrounding renal issues related to heat exposure in farmworkers, found themselves connecting in a different way when one of the faculty members needed a new kidney.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Observance
All are welcome to join members of the Emory University community as we reflect on Yom HaShoah, the day in the Jewish calendar for remembering the unfathomable destruction of the Holocaust. Emory Jewish Chaplain Rabbi Jordan Braunig, Jewish life affiliates, faculty, staff and students will lead a time of poetry, prayer and reflections to remember the six million Jews and all victims of the Holocaust.

As society increasingly relies on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, how can ethically committed individuals and institutions articulate values to guide their development and respond to emerging problems? Join the Office of the Provost to explore the ethical implications of AI in a new AI.Humanity Ethics Lecture Series. Artificial intelligence was forecasted to revolutionize the world for the better. Yet, this promise is still unrealized. What can be done? The answer is two-fold: One part looks to what can be done to prevent the reality of automated decision-making both enabling and obscuring human bias. The second is to look towards proactive measures that could allow AI to work for the greater good.
