Carlos del Rio receives Phoenix Award, city of Atlanta’s highest honor
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms honors infectious disease expert Carlos del Rio for helping civic leaders navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that “it would have been nearly impossible to overcome this challenging time without his science-based counsel and support.”

 

RESEARCH
Mellon Foundation awards Emory College prestigious Sawyer Seminar grant for ‘Visions of Slavery’
A grant from the Mellon Foundation will fund an Emory College-sponsored yearlong examination into the history and struggles of slavery and forced labor. The first Sawyer Seminar event will kick off in the spring.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENT
Senior Annie Li selected as a Marshall Scholar for study in U.K.
Annie Li, a senior in Emory College majoring in history and sociology, has been selected for the Marshall Scholarship. The competitive award covers up to three years of graduate study in the U.K.

 

CONNECTIONS
Indigenous history course uses debate format to create broad engagement
Malinda Maynor Lowery, the new Cahoon Family Professor in American History, incorporated debate into her first Emory College course this fall, an effort that drew engagement while honoring the alumna who helped Emory win its first national debate championship.

New Emory Interfaith Center to provide much-needed gathering space
Expected to open in December 2022 on North Decatur Road, the Emory Interfaith Center will offer space for students to practice their traditions and serve as a community hub for dialogue and understanding.

The Arts and Social Justice Fellows program pairs Atlanta artists with faculty to help students explore the power of art to inspire change through collective action. Each pairing will give a short presentation of artistic projects their class created this semester and engage in a conversation about the profound impact of this work on Emory students and the community at large.
