SCIENCE Ancient DNA lab maps little-explored human lineages In Emory’s new ancient DNA lab, students are working with anthropologist John Lindo to map genetic lineages of the deep past to better understand modern-day populations of the Americas. RESEARCH Emory shares in $18.2 million NIH award to continue work on COVID-19 tests Emory, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Georgia Tech have joined forces to evaluate COVID-19 diagnostic tests. The federally funded project will lead to at-home and other point-of-care COVID tests that could provide results in minutes. COMMUNITY Diversity Week celebrates the rich tapestry of Emory University The Emory community is observing National Diversity Week Oct. 4-10 with events celebrating the rich tapestry of human experiences on campus. Topics include social and racial justice, Latinx music, voting rights and more. See the full schedule. HONORS Spanish faculty member Lisa Dillman named National Book Award finalist Lisa Dillman of Emory's Department of Spanish and Portuguese is one of five finalists in the translated literature category of the National Book Awards for her work on Pilar Quintana’s novel "The Bitch." INSIGHT Catholic theologian Shawn Copeland to give Candler’s McDonald Lectures As holder of the McDonald Chair, Shawn Copeland will present public lectures on Oct. 14 and during spring semester. She is recognized as one of the most important influences in North America in drawing attention to issues surrounding African American Catholics. IMPACT Nevertheless, they persisted: Scholars examine history of women’s suffrage Eléonore Raoul, the first woman admitted to Emory and a graduate of Emory School of Law, played an important role in fighting for women’s voting rights. Emory marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with programs on Oct. 8 and Oct. 22.
