Riney Foundation gives $7.8 million to Winship for multiple myeloma research
The Paula and Rodger Riney Foundation's $7.8 million gift to Emory's Winship Cancer Institute will support fast-tracked research projects in multiple myeloma, a blood cancer caused by malignant plasma cells that accumulate in bone marrow.

ACCOMPLISHMENT
Emory students win Amazon’s Alexa Prize for artificial intelligence ‘social companion’
A team of Emory students won Amazon’s 2020 Alexa Prize, a global competition to create the most engaging chatbot to advance the field of artificial intelligence. The team earned $500,000 for taking first place with their chatbot named Emora.

 

INSPIRATION
Emory professor’s podcast honors civil rights ‘cold case’ widow
“Buried Truths,” the award-winning podcast led by Emory professor Hank Klibanoff, released a special episode this week honoring Sallie Nixon, who saw her husband, Isaiah Nixon, killed in 1948 for voting. Sallie Nixon died July 25 from COVID-19.

Emory, Mexican Consulate partner to address COVID-19 disparities
Fueled by disparities in COVID-19 outcomes in the Latino community, a team of Emory researchers has partnered with the Mexican Consulate of Atlanta to provide COVID-19 testing.

ACHIEVEMENT
Students, alumni awarded Fulbright grants for research, teaching around the world
Thirteen Emory students and recent alumni have been selected as Fulbright finalists to teach English, pursue graduate study and conduct research abroad during the 2020-2021 academic year.
