IMPACT
Remembering John Lewis: A dear friend and inspiration to Emory
Emory lost one of its dearest friends and fiercest inspirations with the passing of civil rights luminary and longtime U.S. Rep. John Lewis. As an activist, member of Congress and Emory Commencement speaker, Lewis forged strong connections with the university.

COMMUNITY
Emory mourns passing of civil rights leader C.T. Vivian
Civil rights leader Rev. C.T. Vivian worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and spent his life speaking out for equality for African Americans. Emory’s Rose Library is home to Vivian’s papers as well as those of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

RESEARCH
Researchers test repurposed cancer drug to reduce COVID-19 lung inflammation
Winship Cancer Institute and Emory investigators are testing whether the anticancer drug duvelisib can reduce lung inflammation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, possibly preventing the need for intubation and lowering mortality.

ACHIEVEMENT
Baseball player earns prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
NJ Kim 19C has been named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, bestowed for excellence in academics, athletics and community leadership. Emory is second only to Stanford for the highest total of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships since 2000.

LEADERSHIP
Honoring President Claire E. Sterk: A legacy of compassion and resolve
Claire Sterk made history as Emory’s first woman president and advanced the university’s commitment to justice and humanity. That commitment has guided Sterk throughout her career, from her groundbreaking work as a researcher and teacher to her service as Emory’s provost and president.

FALL SEMESTER

Stay informed: Last week, Emory announced updated plans for the 2020 fall semester. Plans for returning students to campus have been revised to lower the number of students allowed to live in residence halls and take in-person classes, due to the current COVID-19 conditions in Atlanta.
