COMMITMENT On the front lines of COVID-19: An Emory ER doctor's personal sacrifices Despite having to keep isolated from his family, including a newborn daughter, Emory physician Justin Schrager soldiers on to treat COVID-19 patients and flatten the curve. RESEARCH Mathematicians unite faculty, students and countries to fight COVID-19 After campus closed, Emory mathematician Alessandro Veneziani and colleagues launched an Emory student contest to create mathematical models that might yield useful data for controlling the pandemic. HEALTH Baby monitors serve as new communication tool in Emory ICUs Baby monitors are being used in new ways at Emory Healthcare, linking ICU staff members with each other, while also providing a special connection for COVID-19 patients and their family members. CAMPUS Virtual Town Hall explores community questions, Emory’s next steps Questions about Emory's ongoing work and future plans to navigate the "new normal" of a global pandemic were the focus of a community town hall on Friday, April 24 — an online event that drew more than 3,600 participants. EDUCATION Classes that click: The making of modern South Africa Although Michelle Mugo had not envisioned completing her senior year from home, her takeaways include lessons in adapting to change that will help carry her through life. History professor Clifton Crais believes the pandemic can help us become better teachers, students and citizens. COMMUNITY 'Science of Grief' web event will explore pandemic themes of loss, hope Emory faculty and health care providers will explore the “Science of Grief” through their research, treatment and care, and art. The April 29 program is hosted by Science Gallery, a network of eight university sites worldwide. ARTS Distanced dance: Making the move to remote learning Transitioning to remote learning posed challenges for all Emory faculty and students, but especially those in the performing arts. A little extra creativity and a mindset of generosity helped make it work.

PHOTO GALLERY   Denim Day 2020 The Emory community participated in Denim Day on April 22, an annual event intended to show support for ending sexual violence. Although the event was not in person as in years past, many students, staff and others submitted photos of their participation.
