STUDENTS Meet Emory's Class of 2023 Bright and talented, Emory's new first-year class arrived on campus this week primed to step into college life. Together, the Class of 2023 comes to Emory representing some of the nation's most promising young scholars. RESEARCH Emory receives $2.1 million grant for hypersomnia clinical research The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has awarded a five-year $2.1 million grant to Emory neurologist Lynn Marie Trotti. Researchers will study possible mechanisms behind clarithromycin's effects on sleepiness. PARTNERSHIP Emory to expand research and treatment for premature infants with intestinal disease Researchers from Emory's School of Medicine and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta will collaborate to expand research and treatment for patient-families with necrotizing enterocolitis -- a rare but potentially lethal intestinal disease affecting premature and medically fragile infants. CAMPUS 8 cool facts about the new Emory Student Center The Emory Student Center has officially opened, just in time to welcome students for fall semester. Check out all of the amenities and innovations in this new campus hub, including many that faculty and staff will enjoy.

IMPACT Emory-led digital memorial shines new light on slave voyages Recently updated, "Slave Voyages: The Transatlantic Slave Trade Database" uses big data to bring history to life, offering researchers and visitors a more complete portrait of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. RECOGNITION 'Conversations with Claire' video series debuts with President Jimmy Carter The inaugural episode of Emory President Claire E. Sterk's new video series features President Jimmy Carter, who has been granted tenure after serving as Emory University Distinguished Professor for almost 40 years. SCIENCE Civil War plant medicines blast drug-resistant bacteria Studying a guide to plant remedies commissioned during the Civil War, Emory researcher Cassandra Quave finds that three plants have antimicrobial activity against dangerous species of drug-resistant bacteria associated with wound infections. COMMEMORATION Five years later, Ebola patients return to Emory As an Ebola epidemic continues in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Emory marks the fifth anniversary of treating the first patients with Ebola in the U.S. by reaffirming its commitment to preparedness and care for global infectious diseases.
