MILESTONE It's official: Emory recognized as largest employer in metro Atlanta Emory University isn't only ranked as a great place to work on multiple local and national lists. Now, for the first time ever, Emory is the largest employer in metro Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Under President Claire E. Sterk's leadership, Emory has more than 31,000 full-time employees in the metro area and 37,716 in total. INSIGHT 'Race and the Obama Administration' explores substance, symbols and promises kept Emory political scientist Andra Gillespie's new book offers a data-driven examination of the outcomes — and perceptions — of the Obama presidency as seen through prisms of race and politics. IMPACT Schapiro: Under Stevens, 'No institution and no person was above the law' Robert Schapiro, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law at Emory, reflects on the career and legacy of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who died July 16. HISTORY 'Black Cosmopolitan' exhibit focuses on James Weldon Johnson's diplomatic career The newest exhibit at Emory's Rose Library highlights the often-overlooked diplomatic career of James Weldon Johnson and how his international experiences intersected with his advocacy for black freedom at home and abroad. RESEARCH Routine blood test could lead to earlier diabetes diagnosis The results of random plasma glucose tests could help physicians identify individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes earlier than is normally done, according to Emory research published this week in the journal PLOS ONE. NUTRITION Study highlights need for real-time energy balance The type and quantity of food you eat isn't all that matters to your body: when you eat can also help strike the best balance between energy consumed and energy burned during exercise, according to researchers with Emory's Center for the Study of Human Health and Rollins School of Public Health.
