Emory-led digital memorial shines new light on slave voyages
Recently updated, "Slave Voyages: The Transatlantic Slave Trade Database" uses big data to bring history to life, offering researchers and visitors a more complete portrait of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. See a time-lapse animation of more than 14,000 slave voyages, view a 3D video reconstruction of an actual slave ship, and more.

Two Emory professors win Georgia Author of the Year awards
Ruby Lal's "Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan" took top honors in the biography category for the Georgia Author of the Year Awards, while Joseph Crespino's "Atticus Finch: The Biography" won the history category.

 

RESEARCH
How customized antibiotic combinations could defeat 'superbugs'
A sneaky form of antibiotic resistance called "heteroresistance" is more widespread than previously appreciated. But Emory scientists found that tracking heteroresistance might guide the choice of antibiotic combinations that can defeat bacteria regarded as invincible.

 

DISCOVERY
The whisper of schizophrenia: Machine learning finds 'sound' words predict psychosis
A machine-learning method developed by scientists at Emory and Harvard discovered a hidden clue in people's language that predicts the later emergence of psychosis: the frequent use of words associated with sound.

Emory welcomes new director of heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and ECMO
Mani Daneshmand has joined Emory as director of the Emory Heart & Lung Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs. He also holds the position of director of the Emory ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Program.
