RESEARCH Study reveals how the brain decides to make an effort A new study by Emory psychologist Michael Treadway reveals the mechanics of how the brain makes effortful decisions, calculating whether it is worth expending effort in exchange for potential rewards. HEALTH Sugars in infant formulas pose risk to babies with inherited metabolic disorder Babies with inherited intolerance of fructose face a risk of acute liver failure if they are fed certain widely available formulas containing fructose, pediatricians and geneticists are warning. ACHIEVEMENT Two Emory College graduates awarded NSF Graduate Fellowships The National Science Foundation has awarded coveted Graduate Research Fellowships to Tristan Yates and Liz O'Gorman, who just graduated from Emory College with honors with degrees in neuroscience and behavioral biology. CAMPUS Campus participation in new waste policy spurs results With strong community participation, Emory's new waste diversion policy is already making an impact, diverting nearly 70 percent of total campus waste from landfills in March alone. MEDICINE Natural antioxidant bilirubin may improve cardiovascular health Bilirubin, a yellow-orange pigment, is formed after the breakdown of red blood cells and is eliminated by the liver. It's not only a sign of a bruise, it may provide cardiovascular benefits, according to a large-scale epidemiology study. INNOVATION Emory College launches strategic priorities to build academic excellence Emory College of Arts and Sciences has launched an ambitious set of strategic priorities set to advance the College as a leader for the liberal arts and sciences, both within the university and beyond.
