CLASS OF 2018   IMPACT Acclaimed artist Fahamu Pecou earns PhD with project exploring black identity Not every PhD candidate has elements of their dissertation displayed in an art gallery, but Fahamu Pecou has never followed the typical path for a doctoral student. A rising star in the art world, Pecou found an intellectual home in Laney Graduate School, from which he will receive his degree at Monday's 173rd Commencement. MILESTONE Emory program for first-generation college students set to graduate first participants Amid the pomp and circumstance of next week's Commencement, the 1915 Scholars, an Emory program that aids first-generation college students, will graduate its first cohort. RESEARCH Undergraduate research explores the ethics of artificial intelligence Ben Goldfein's honors thesis examines the philosophical impact of AI and why "we need to shift the current ethos of technological progress and start realizing that it is not just the end results which matter, but also the means to get there." HONORS Arts majors receive national award for achievement in creativity Film and media studies major Leila Yavari and business and music major Eric Newell are the 2018 recipients of the Louis B. Sudler Prize in the Arts, honoring graduating seniors with exceptional promise in the arts. ACHIEVEMENT Separated at graduation: The Boden triplets part ways for a great cause The Boden triplets will be separated for the first time in their lives as they graduate from Emory University School of Medicine and head to different residency programs to begin their careers in orthopedics.

MORE NEWS   COLLABORATION Emory Healthcare and DeKalb Medical move to finalize strategic partnership Emory Healthcare and DeKalb Medical are close to completing their strategic partnership, initiated through a letter of intent signed in November 2017. The Federal Trade Commission has approved the partnership, and the application will now be filed with the Georgia Attorney General. COMMUNITY Emory's approach to open expression gains attention When Emory students gathered April 20 to advocate for gun safety measures, they were joined by two "open expression observers," part of the university's ongoing, innovative efforts to support free speech on campus. ARTS Emory acquires archive of dancers Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder Emory has acquired the papers of dancers, activists and artists Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder. The university will award de Lavallade an honorary doctor of fine arts degree at Commencement on May 14. RESEARCH DNA analysis adds twists to ancient story of a Native American group Geneticist John Lindo publishes research on the Tsimshian indigenous people, drawing from the first population-level nuclear DNA analysis of a Native American group from ancient to modern times.
