GLOBAL Undergraduate research spotlights health care challenges of migrants in Morocco Emory College senior Madelyn R. Haden focused her honors thesis on sharing the stories of undocumented migrants in Morocco and how current policies affect their health care access and societal integration. ENVIRONMENT Sustainability leaders recognized with 2021 Innovator and Lifetime Achievement Awards Emory's Office of Sustainability Initiatives has announced this year's winners of the Robert S. Hascall Sustainability Innovator Awards and the new Sustainability Lifetime Achievement Awards, given to students, faculty and staff who employ research, academics, engagement and leadership to foster sustainability across the university. ARTS Theater studies senior tackles how to produce live theater in a pandemic era For her undergraduate honors thesis, Ruth Puryear directed a drive-in musical to explore how to create intimacy and vulnerability onstage — while actors kept to safety protocols and audience members watched from their cars. SCIENCE Human antibiotic use threatens endangered wild chimpanzees New research led by disease ecologist Thomas Gillespie shows that nearly half of the fecal samples from endangered wild chimpanzees contain bacteria that is resistant to a major class of antibiotics commonly used by people in the vicinity of Tanzania’s Gombe National Park. First author of the study is Michele Parsons, who did the work as an environmental sciences doctoral student. RANKINGS Emory named among top universities in meeting social, intellectual, economic challenges Emory has been named among the best American universities in the second annual QS USA University Rankings, designed to assess how well universities are responding to current social, intellectual and economic challenges.
