COMMUNITY Emory responds to recent shootings with resources for support and safety As the Emory community joins in mourning the victims of recent mass shootings, President Claire E. Sterk pledges the university will remain committed to embracing diversity and will continue to speak out against violence and hatred. Learn about support resources and safety steps if there is an emergency on campus. LITERATURE Emory to host Decatur Book Festival's opening discussion of Latinx and immigration issues Emory will again be a presenting sponsor of the Decatur Book Festival over Labor Day weekend. Tickets for the opening keynote panel presentation, which takes place at Emory, will be available Tuesday, Aug. 13, at noon. ENVIRONMENT Artificial intelligence helps Emory scientist, students examine air pollution With support from Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence for Earth program, Emory environmental scientist Eri Saikawa and her students aim to create an early warning system for dangerous air pollution levels in Nepal. RESEARCH Chemists teach old drug new tricks to target deadly staph bacteria Emory chemist Bill Wuest leads a team of students fighting drug-resistant bacteria. Their most recent work, published in PNAS, helped verify how bithionol can weaken the cell membranes of deadly staph bacteria. CONNECTIONS Klamath Henry brings new focus to Native American art Klamath Henry, who graduated from Emory College in May, spent her summer increasing awareness of the Native North American gallery at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, including creating a new SmARTy Pack activity for young visitors. MILESTONE Five years later, Ebola patients return to Emory Dr. Kent Brantly was the first patient to be treated for Ebola virus disease in the U.S. He and fellow survivor Nancy Writebol returned to Emory on Aug. 2 to mark the fifth anniversary of their care and all that has been learned. INTERNATIONAL Students investigate political economic realities in Spain Sociology students from Oxford College spent 10 days in Spain exploring global political economy and sustainability. Students engaged with Spanish urban farmers, political organizers, scholars, civil engineers and more.
