CAMPUS The Peeps experiments: A seasonal celebration of science Douglas Mulford, senior lecturer for the Department of Chemistry, treats students every spring to a "Peeps" show, a 45-minute experiment of every chemical thing that you can do to Peeps. INSIGHT Artist Carrie Mae Weems visits Emory to 'think together the big questions' As the final speaker in this year's Provost Lecture Series, photographer and video installation artist Carrie Mae Weems explored the legacy of African American identity, class, culture. SUSTAINABILITY Emory community makes progress on 'zero landfill waste' goal Thanks to participation from students, faculty and staff, Emory made significant progress last year towards the goal of diverting 95 percent of campus waste from municipal landfills by 2025. RESEARCH Campus tree leads student to ancient Chinese text and laboratory discovery Extracts from the seeds of the ginkgo tree show antibacterial activity on pathogens that can cause skin infections, according to a study that started as Emory biology major Xinyi Huang's senior thesis and drew inspiration from an ancient text in the theology library. Carlos Museum has received a centennial gift from the Georges Ricard Foundation of the Senusret Collection, one of the most extensive single collections of ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern objects to be gifted to a U.S. museum. IMPACT 'Your Fantastic Mind' delves into sleep apnea, unexpected stroke and Alzheimer's Days after writer Jerry Grillo had an MRI for a story about the aging brain, he suffered a cerebellar stroke. In the new episode of "Your Fantastic Mind," delve into Grillo's story, new treatments for sleep apnea, and a personal tale of love, loss, baseball and Alzheimer's. DISCOVERY Young children alter behavior to please others, Emory grad student's research finds In a new TEDxAtlanta talk, psychology PhD student Sara Botto explains her experiments showing how children develop sensitivity to others' evaluations even before they learn to speak in simple sentences.
