OUTREACH Emory Cares International Service Day unites community to help others On Saturday, Nov. 11, hundreds of Emory students, alumni, staff, faculty, family members and friends will join in a day of volunteering in Atlanta and other cities around the world. LEADERSHIP Emory advocates for changes to congressional tax reform proposal In an Oct. 31 letter to Georgia's congressional delegation, Emory President Claire E. Sterk discusses tax reform measures that could have a deleterious effect on Emory's students, employees and patients. COURTS Emory joins legal brief supporting DACA students Emory is among 19 universities that filed an amicus brief Nov. 1 in support of students attending college while participating in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program. ARTS Author Colm Tóibín to examine fathers of famed writers at Ellmann Lectures Acclaimed Irish author Colm Tóibín brings his experiences and insights to Emory Nov. 12-14 to deliver the Richard Ellmann Lectures in Modern Literature, where he'll address the theme of "Writers and Their Fathers: Wilde, Yeats and Joyce." IN CLASS Carlos Museum gives students first-hand look at ancient artifacts Moving beyond the traditional classroom, students learn about ancient Mediterranean culture by examining museum artifacts and weighing ethical questions about how they are obtained and displayed. RESEARCH Space station will host stem cells for heart research Emory/CHOA researchers will examine whether microgravity can enhance the ability of induced pluripotent stem cells to turn into cardiac muscle cells, with help from the International Space Station. ENVIRONMENT Mandatory state policies work best to curb power plant emissions, study finds U.S. state policies aimed at mitigating power plant emissions vary widely in effectiveness, finds a new study by Emory researchers published in Nature Climate Change. The study shows that policies with mandatory compliance are associated with the largest reductions in power plant emissions. IMPACT Public scholar Ellison shares his journey in 'Fearless Dialogues' Gregory Ellison of Emory's Candler School of Theology shares his unconventional road to life as a public scholar and founder of a growing grassroots organization in his latest book, "Fearless Dialogues: A New Movement for Justice."
