INNOVATION Inside Brotherman's Big City In 1990, "Brotherman" debuted as one of the first comic books to feature a black hero. Almost three decades later, with help from Emory's digital scholars, this groundbreaking text is reimagined as an immersive, virtual reality world. LITERATURE Meet Emory authors at this weekend's Decatur Book Festival Novelist Stacia Pelletier, chief writer for the Office of the President, joins a diverse range of Emory faculty and staff with appearances at the Decatur Book Festival. SUSTAINABILITY Planned trail to offer new options for cyclists, pedestrians A planned bicycle/pedestrian trail will link Emory's Clairmont Campus to Mason Mill Park and points beyond, opening up new commuting and recreation options for the university community. IMPACT New professors offer a rich array of experiences, scholarship From mathematicians, environmental scientists and chemists to scholars who study literature, ancient DNA, and health care disparities, new faculty members bring a wealth of expertise across a sweeping range of intellectual disciplines. COMMUNITY Total solar eclipse creates bonding experience for BBA students Each year, new BBA students travel to Clayton, Georgia, for leadership programming as part of their orientation. But this year's trip included a unique twist: Clayton was in the path of totality for the solar eclipse. TEACHING Fall courses engage emerging scholarship, hands-on learning Across Emory, fall semester courses bring both new insights and historical context to critical issues, tackling topics ranging from big data to big questions like what it means to be human and where human rights come from. AMENITIES Renovated Learning Commons opens on Woodruff Library Level 1 The renovated Learning Commons has opened on Level 1 of Emory's Woodruff Library, with booths, movable seating, study pods and plenty of power outlets. INSPIRATION Don and Emily Saliers to explore music, social justice at Oxford event Emory theologian Don Saliers and his daughter, Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers 85C, will perform together at Oxford College on Tuesday. "Sing Justice, Sing Life" will feature a mixture of hymns and songs from her musical career. ARTS Composer, klezmer fiddler Svigals to perform original score at Emory Alicia Svigals, the world's leading klezmer fiddler, will perform her original score during a Sept. 7 screening of the 1918 silent film "The Yellow Ticket," which follows a young Jewish woman facing anti-Semitism in Russia. COMMUNITY 'Conversations with America': Emory advances discourse on national issues Kicking off yesterday in Pittsburgh, "Conversations with America" is part of Emory's effort to advance and promote conversation and civil discourse on the most difficult issues facing our nation. ATHLETICS Fall sports teams aim for winning seasons Emory's volleyball, soccer and cross country teams start their fall seasons Sept. 1, looking to build on last year's success, when all posted winning records and volleyball advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.
