Do your part—vote

The right to actively participate in our democracy is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities of every American. I encourage you to exercise your right to vote in the upcoming election.

Both Emory University and Emory Healthcare support their team members’ right to vote by providing paid time off for voting. Please discuss your unit’s policy with your supervisor so that you can plan accordingly.

As an institution we are committed to encouraging free and open debate on the important issues facing our nation and the world. I ask that you maintain workplace political etiquette by treating all colleagues’ opinions with courtesy and respect. As Americans and Georgians, let’s continue to value, respect, and celebrate each other, and respect that our co-workers may have different viewpoints and may also prefer not to discuss politics while working. As a reminder, please do not email, post on bulletin boards, or distribute political information to co-workers; wear items with political statements or support for a candidate; or engage in campaign discussions while performing your work duties.

There’s no question that 2020 has been a unique year characterized by often divisive rhetoric and opposing views on a variety of topics, but here at Emory, our missions remain the same. Whatever our political views may be, we are all united by our commitment to serving our country and the greater good.

Addiction Alliance of Georgia

Emory Healthcare and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation have partnered to create the Addiction Alliance of Georgia. The alliance will collaborate and seek public and private community partners throughout Georgia to advance addiction-related clinical care, education and research.

According to federal data, more than 20 million Americans needed substance use treatment in 2019, but only about 1 in 10 received the specialty health care they needed. Addiction to alcohol, opioids and other drugs is a leading cause of disease, disability and premature death in America, with drug overdoses alone resulting in a record 72,000 lost lives in 2019. The national overdose epidemic now is worsening as deaths spike further amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Addiction Alliance of Georgia will be focused initially on several key outreach and education initiatives, including possible prevention work at Atlanta-area schools, training partnerships with interested providers of professional education on substance use disorders, and community-based workshops aimed at reducing stigma by providing a better understanding of addiction as a chronic, treatable disease.
