My first 52 days

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online for my first address as Emory’s executive vice president for health affairs. It was a real pleasure to meet so many of you in person, and I look forward to meeting many more of you soon as I continue to visit Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) and Emory Healthcare (EHC) facilities over the coming weeks. If you couldn’t join us in real time, I hope you’ll take a few moments to view a video of the event, in which I had the opportunity to reflect upon my first 52 days at Emory and to share my plans over the next six to 12 months.

As I mentioned, I have taken these first weeks to listen, learn, and strategize. I’ve discovered how vital WHSC and EHC are to our university and our community, and I’ve seen firsthand that it’s our people who make this institution what it is. Getting out across campus and seeing the excellence and compassion you bring to your work has been inspirational. You are the reason patients, researchers, students, and others want to be part of the Emory family, and I am grateful for all that you do.

Among the opportunities I see us addressing together in the coming months are identifying new leaders, including a School of Medicine dean and a CEO for Emory Healthcare; being more judicious with our spending and implementing financial improvement ideas submitted by our team members; transforming our digital excellence to enhance patient experience, quality, and caregiver support; and continuing to accelerate our outstanding research trajectory.

As WHSC benefactor Mr. Robert W. Woodruff was fond of saying, “There is no way that any organization or individual, at any stage of its life, can sit back, rest on its laurels, and be content to collect the rewards already won. You continue to grow, or you deteriorate.” I am confident that our best days lie ahead and that we will have many opportunities to continue to grow as we move forward together.

Kind regards,

Ravi
