Carrying on MLK’s legacy

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is,'What are you doing for others?'”
—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Colleagues:

I hope you enjoyed a peaceful and restorative holiday season. I know yet another surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations is not how any of us hoped to begin 2022, but as we head into Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I hope you will find comfort, courage, and cause for hope in Dr. King’s life and legacy, as I do.

Here in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC), Dr. King’s teachings are deeply embedded in who we are and all that we do. As an institution and as individuals, we apply his values and principles in our daily lives and work and in the service we provide to the community he called home.

We honor Dr. King’s extraordinary vision through our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, collegiality, and constructive culture. We provide the finest care available anywhere to the poor, the uninsured and underinsured, children and seniors, veterans, and all who turn to us in their time of need. We educate the next generation of health professionals to provide leading-edge, compassionate care to all. And we pioneer discoveries that help us better prevent, detect, and treat disease for all people everywhere.

We make a lasting and tangible difference in the lives of thousands of people every year, many of them among our community’s most vulnerable. In this way, every member of the WHSC carries on Dr. King’s legacy every day.

Thank you, as always, for all that you do to help make our community a kinder and healthier place. I am humbled and honored to call you my colleagues. I wish you much joy and continued success in the year ahead.
