Weathering the COVID-19 surge

COVID-19 cases in Georgia and across the country are on the rise again as the anticipated fall surge of the pandemic begins. If you let down your guard during the summer months, it’s time to once again be diligent about practicing appropriate safety measures to help mitigate the rate of infection in our community. I urge you to:

  • Continue to wear a mask covering both your nose and mouth.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.
  • Practice social distancing by keeping a minimum of six feet from others.
  • Get flu shots for yourself and your loved ones as soon as possible.
  • Practice masking and social distancing and stick to outdoor activities if you celebrate Halloween this weekend.

Let’s all commit to following these basic safety measures to protect ourselves, our colleagues, and our loved ones as we enter what is likely to be a difficult season. Thanks as always for your continued optimism and resilience. As we did in the spring, we will weather the fall surge together.

Curran leaving Winship

Walter J. (Wally) Curran Jr. has resigned as Winship Executive Director. Curran, who became executive director of Winship Cancer Institute in 2009, announced that he has accepted a leadership position with GenesisCare, a privately-owned company that manages treatment and care for people with cancer and heart disease. His departure from Winship is scheduled for late January 2021. Because of the transformational work done by Curran, his leadership team, and many others over the course of the last 10 years, Winship is Georgia’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and is positioned as a global leader in cancer research and clinical care. Under Curran’s leadership, we opened Georgia’s first proton therapy center, and are building the 21st century cancer center—Winship at Emory Midtown.
